They were held on the 2nd Saturday of the month from March through October. At the end of the show, the winning cars lined up behind Gary�s Buick and paraded several times around the main streets with siren, lights, and of course the Highway Patrol theme song blaring. A Neil Young Encounter

On Thursday, September 12, 1996, I went to see a concert of my favorite singer/song writer "Neil Young" at Irvine Meadows, in Irvine, California. My friend suggested I drive the Broderick Crawford Special, as he had heard Neil was a nostalgic Buick fan. After the show, I was allowed to park my Buick next to Neil's tour bus.

The tour bus itself was a tribute to classic Buicks. It had two 48 Roadmaster roofs mounted on the top, with a 48 Roadmaster grill mounted on the front, and 61 Buick tail lights mounted on its rear. It also had a set of 54 Buick portholes on its side.

After a short wait, Neil came out of the stage exit on his way to the bus. Upon seeing my Highway Patrol car, he paused to admired it with a true Buick lover's glow in his eyes. I played the Highway Patrol theme song through the car's P.A. system. This brought a smile to Neil and the estimated 30 people that had gathered around. I then switched to a new Neil Young release. With the cars mike in hand, Neil began singing along to his CD over my car's P.A.!

After pausing for a few pictures, Neil was on his way. It was a moment I will always remember.

A year later I was at another Neil show this time wearing a tee shirt that had the picture of us on it. When I got to go back stage after the show Neil walked past me and looked pretty tiered. I yelled out to him and he initially said �hey man I�m ready to call it a night�. But then I said look at my shirt to which he glanced down and immediately got a smile on his face saying �I remember you and that cool Buick�. I asked him to sign the shirt which he did while I was wearing it. I told him the problem was now that he signed it I couldn�t wear it anymore since I was going to have it framed!

In 2002 I got to go back stage at a show of the compete group Crosby Stills Nash and Young my all time favorite group.

For those who may not know, Neil's song Long May You Run is a tribute to his 48 Buick Roadmaster hearst he called Mort. It the one he was driving in Los Angeles back in 1966 when he ran into Stills and formed the Buffalo Springfield. I have since further dedicated the song to my Buick, the Broderick Crawford Special too.

This car was bought in July 2005 by Albert Okura - owner of the Inland Empire restaurant chain Juan Pollo's in California.
He also purchased the little Route 66 town of Amboy on eBay several years ago with the intent of making it a road tour destination.

1954 OLDSMOBILE SUPER 88 2 DOOR POST SEDAN

This story is about an authentic replica of those '54 Oldsmobile's used by the California Highway Patrol, and enjoyed by so many of us in the TV series. It � like its CHP counterpart � is a Super-88 2-door post sedan with the mighty "Rocket 88" 324 cubic inch 4-barrel engine and standard 3-speed transmission. Options included heater/defroster, radio, drivers outside mirror, and backup lights. Hawk Motor Company, the Oldsmobile dealer in Bakersfield, California, prepared and delivered 100 such Oldsmobiles to the California Highway Patrol. 35 of these Oldsmobiles can be seen in the accompanying photograph from the April, 1954 issue of "The Oldsmobile Rocket." This is a newsletter published exclusively for Oldsmobile's retail sales organization by the Oldsmobile Division, Lansing, Michigan.

While it's not totally clear what was done by the factory and what was done by the dealer. Preparation of the cars included: deleting the rocker and side moldings, painting the doors white and adding the official CHP door shield. Once delivered the CHP installed dual fender-mount spotlights (one red), a single rear facing flashing red light on the package tray, a siren (under the hood) and a Motorola Twin 2-way radio with whip antenna.

The history of this car is less clear. I found it in Arkansas in the hands of a fellow NAOC Oldsmobile enthusiast who fully intended to transform it into a hot rod. After seven years, however, he couldn't bring himself to modify an otherwise unmolested survivor and offered it for sale in "Runabouts to Rockets."

I had to go and see the car so I offered to take my wife on a romantic trip to Eureka Springs Arkansas to celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary � the same place we celebrated our 25th. She saw right through my story and asked �"What kind of Oldsmobile part are we going to see?" Imagine her surprise to hear it was a whole car! Well, to make a long story short, I made a deal for the car and agreed to come back in two weeks and pick it up�just in time to celebrate her birthday! For some strange reason, she considers the car "hers."

My initial intent was to fix up the car and make it a daily driver (I have an affinity for 50s stick-shift 2-door post Oldsmobiles.) As we got into it, one thing led to another and soon we had the body off and committed to a full-blown restoration. It wasn't until I emailed 1954 model year advisor "Rocket Bob" Campbell with a question about a standard steering wheel on a Super-88, that I even considered creating a Highway Patrol car. His reply was "GOOD GOD MAN, THAT'S a 2-DOOR STICK! WOW! You have one rare puppy there! That�s the rarest model short of a convertible! And with a stick it's the Highway Patrol and NASCAR model as well. Boy, you need to do that car right!"

Bob then introduced me to a friend in Kansas City who did a super job transforming his '54 Olds 2-door stick into a period NASCAR racer. Since a fellow-Missourian had already created the NASCAR and, having been a TV Highway Patrol fan growing up, I decided that a Highway Patrol car it was going to be. Then the fun began!

Having just retired with lots of time on my hands�and with the professional help of Missouri Classics�we undertook the task of bringing a Highway Patrol car back to life. "Trooper" (as we affectionately call the car) is almost done and will make his Oldsmobile debut in Spokane at the 2006 NAOC National Meet. Hope to see you there.
